What better time than during the DMV’s most famous season – cherry blossoms! – than to celebrate the Best of the District of Columbia? Washington City Paper took over the cavernous DC Armory in Southeast to fete the 2016 winners, announced to the public during the event. WCP is decidedly nonpartisan, making sure everyone gets a voice in the system. Plus, proceeds from the event went to two great charities: Brainfood and World Beats & Life.

Voting winners were divided between Staff Picks and the Reader Poll. Readers were able to choose faves in standard categories like Best Brewery (Right Proper), Sports Bar (Nellie’s), Movie Theater (E Street), and Lifestyle Blog (Popville), as well as some unique options: Tea Shop (Calabash Tea & Tonic), Local Instagram (Taylor Gourmet), and Place to Take a Tinder Date (McClellan’s Retreat). The Staff Picks are more eclectic: Best Bar and Restaurant for Punk-Rock Parents (Slash Run); Best Old Reliable Gay Bar (Number Nine), Best New (Old) Museum (National Museum of Women in the Arts), and Best Place to Catch a Glimpse of FLOTUS (SoulCycle).

At a cocktail-attire party, it’s tough to get on a bike, but there was certainly plenty of food and drink to be had to help celebrate. In homage to what has been the opposite of a media darling of late, the DC Metro, each grouping of restaurants was set up around Metro station signs (“let’s go to Ballston!” was probably something said for the very first time by many partygoers).

Tons of Tunes were enjoyed all evening long

Tons of tasteful tunes were enjoyed all evening long.

Mixologists played with lots of whiskeys, coming off winter, but also plenty of gin, hopeful for spring soon. And as would be appropriate, restaurants made efforts to source specifically from DC breweries and distilleries. Highlights included a tropical rum negroni from Don Ciccio & Figli, The Royal’s fruity sling using Catoctin Creek liquor, and a wistful whiskey cocktail by The Gibson called Memories. Waking up the palate was the thoughtful Gina Chersevani of Buffalo & Bergen, serving Bloody Marys overstuffed with pickled veggies as well as to mini-bagels topped with caviar and crème fraiche.

On the main stage, The Dupont Brass Band gave the crowd some serious funk. Later in the evening, Batala Washington broke it down on drums, celebrating Afro-Brazilian culture, playing sensual samba and reggae music on a chilly early-April evening. Other entertainment came in the form of cornhole and life-sized Jenga courtesy of United Social Sports, making sure that the crowd stayed lively and athletic while throwing back craft cocktails and finely plated small bites.

Dessert came in the form of heavenly doughnuts, cookies, and Harper Macaw’s sea-salt-and-coconut chocolate bark – but also another kind of bark: Wagtime enthralled the crowd with an absolutely adorable doggie playspace. Never has celebrated all the greatest in DC ever been so “ruff.”

wonka“Chocolate prices will likely go up — possibly by as much as 20% — due to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, which produces 70 percent of the world’s cocoa beans.” Here is the related CNN  article. Thanks “Need To Know NYC” for the heads up.

Alter Eco ChocolateAlter Eco Chocolate Bars (and quinoa) are organically grown, fairly traded, hand cultivated, Non GMO, and Carbon Zero Certified.

We sampled a variety of Alter Eco’s products, including:

Dark Quinoa (60%): This chocolate has nutty toasted quinoa and a nice flavor and crunch. Plus, Quinoa is healthy, right? This is the Alter Eco bar both “S” and I kept reaching for, so is our favorite of the Alter Eco bars. While we are mentioning quinoa, We’ve also tried Alter Eco’s Organic Royal Red Quinoa and Organic Royal Black Quinoa, both of which are nutty, flavorful, and delicious, so we are not surprised that they did such a good job on the Dark Quinoa bar.

Dark Mint (60%): This one is bold, brisk, a little crispy, and has a nice mint flavor. This one is my second favorite Alter Eco bar.

Dark Cacao (63% cocoa): This one has cocoa nibs and is crunchy with a bittersweet bite.  They definitely did a great job on the texture and flavor of this one.

Dark Twist (60%). I agree with Alter Ego that this bar (which features crystallized orange peel) is vibrant and tangy. This is a “go to” bar for me, but I do love combinations of chocolate and citrus.

Dark Blackout (85%): This bar is dark, deep, and fruity, and not as strong as I expected at 85% cocoa. I enjoyed it much more than I would have expected.

Dark Noir (60% cocoa): This is their standard dark chocolate, and is dark, rich, and a bit sweet and smooth.

Dark Velvet (47% cocoa: has a touch of milk and is velvety smooth): This one is a little mild for my taste.

Dark Almond (60%): This bar has a great chocolate flavor, but does not have the almond flavor I expect from this combination.

A note about fiber in the Alter Eco bars:  Th Dark Blackout is the clear winner in the fiber wars with 5 grams of fiber per serving. The Dark Cacao and the Dark Almond have 4 grams of fiber per serving. The Dark Quinoa and Dark Twist have 3 grams of fiber per serving, while the Dark Velvet only has 2 grams.

We also got to sample a few of Zoe’s  Chocolate Company‘s products. Zoe’s is based in both Frederick, MD and Waynesboro, PA. Their truffles arrived packaged nicely in a small brown pack with a pink ribbon.

The ZCC Cafe Truffle‘s gnache filling has a nice creamy texture, and is definitely good quality chocolate. ZCC describes this truffle as “Dark chocolate ganache infused with freshly roasted Greek blend coffee beans enrobed in creamy milk chocolate.”

    Zoe's Sports Bar.

    Zoe’s Sports Bar.

The Dionysus Baklava Truffle  is like chocolate covered baklava, and has good texture that is both soft and crunchy; this is definitely a truffle I could just keep reaching for. ZCC describes it as “Creamy Greek honey combined with roasted walnuts and baklava spice, dipped in chocolate, and rolled in a blend of nuts & spice.”

The clear winner in the ZCC products was the Sports Bar, which has a great combination of chocolaty, peanutty, sweet, and salty flavors; this is a delicious and chocolate bar that also has great texture. The bar unfortunately is basically shrinkwrap sealed, so it is not packaged in a manner where it can be easily opened or resealed. ZCC’s description of the Sports Bar is below:

“Our Sports Bar was the all time favorite for the world leaders to get a taste of an all-American traditional pastime, the big game. Crispy puffed caramelized popcorn-like rice crisps mixed into luscious dark chocolate and topped with carefully roasted honeyed peanuts. A little salty and a little sweet.”

Expect more product reviews from DCFüd this summer since I will be attending the Fancy Food Show in New York City later this month.

    —————–

This Could Be Your Big Break

You’ve seen the chocolates.  You know they’re hot.  Now’s your chance to be a part of the hotness! Artisan Confections is now accepting submissions of original artwork to be transformed into chocolate.  We’re known for our bonbons being as beautiful as they are delicious, and right now we’re hunting for new and unique artwork to feature on our seasonal flavors.  Novice and professional artists alike are encouraged to send in an unlimited number of submissions, but only four will be selected to become part of our collection for the next year!

Our bonbons are available at our shop in Clarendon and at other select retailers in the DC area, and the names of our chosen artists will be included in every box of chocolates that we sell.  That’s thousands of boxes a year going out with your name featured on our flavor guide.  Whether you’re a small-scale crafter cracking into the Etsy market, a polished graphic designer looking for more exposure, or a student with a knack for doodling and a craving for a little fame, that’s a whole lot of free publicity! Plus, we’ll give the four selected artists a $100 gift certificate to enjoy the delicious fruits of their labors.  What other contest offers the chance for creative fulfillment and an upscale chocolate binge?

For details and artistic guidelines, send an email to Jason@artisanconfections with the subject line “Art.”  No phone calls, please.  The deadline for submissions is September 20th, so get to sketching soon!
