    ——————–
    Autumn Open House

Those of you who’ve been with us for a few years know that this is the time of year that we like to mix things up. Chocolatiers, you see, are a fickle breed. We’re ready to make a major change. How major? 11 out of 15 flavors major. We’re keeping a few of our favorites around, but adding a bunch of new and fun flavors to the lineup. Two of our most requested flavors ever will become regulars (sorry trendsetters, still no bacon) but that also means that we’ll have to say goodbye to some of our very popular current flavors.

If you’ve been playing along at home, you know what that means: sale! So, join us for our Autumn Open House on Saturday, October 23rd from 11 to 3. We’ll be sampling all of our new products, and offering deep discounts on outgoing bonbons. Need more incentive? Check out next week’s reminder email for a sweet coupon good only at our Open House.

Groupon is a great site to get restaurant (or other) certificates at half off. Next came LivingSocial and Buy With me, and recently Corner Dish.  Today brings the launch of the Washington Post’s The Capitol Dish.  Groupon and LivingSocial have Droid (and maybe iPhone) apps

I’ve used Groupon and Living Social so far, and not only for restaurant certificates. I’ve also used them for apartment cleaning, and classes.

    Today’s Restaurant Specials:

Groupon: $20 gets you $40 at Penang on M Street.

Living Social: $20 gets you $40.

Buy With Me:  $15 gets you $30 at Green Papaya in Bethesda.

Corner Dish: $15 gets you $30 worth of food & drink at Bistro Cacao in Washington, DC.

Capitol Dish: $25 gets you $50 at PS7’s,  or $15 gets you $30 at Kaz Sushi Bistro and Napoleon Bistro and Lounge.

Thanks Grace for commenting with more options:

Specialicious has $20 off $40 for Eleventh (in Clarendon) today, and Deals For Deeds has $15 off $30 for Justin’s Cafe.

Update (January, 2011): Corner dish has closed its doors.

I had an event to attend Wednesday evening in Bethesda so I asked Lisa for recommendations.  All three of the places she mentioned looked on the upscale side for me, the ethnic dive guy, but one was next very close to the event.  So, I looked on Chef Tony’s website and say a happy hour special with 1/2 price tapas and glasses of wine until 6:30pm.  Turns out that the happy hour is actually until 7pm, and the tapas menu is outdated, but they do have 1/2 price appetizers and glasses of wine.

This turned out to be very good upscale food for about $4 a dish or glass of wine (I drank malbec).  Great deal.

I had the fillet mignon skewer appetizer size (which is not on the menu as an app), it was tender and flavorful and had really good homemade picked and plantains. My favorite dish that I had there. My friend raved about the plantains.

I also ordered the tomato and fresh mozzarella salad. Tony makes his own mozzarella and has someone who grows tomatoes for him.  The fig balsamic vinaigrette went with the cheese very well.

The crayfish egg rolls were good as well but I would have preferred that the cabbage was cooked through a bit more.

The mussels in bacon and cream sauce were good, and I had Justin (our waiter, who is awesome) bring me some grilled bread with it.

BTW, Chef Tony’s will have a Halloween party Thursday the 28th. Justin will be be playing…although I don’t know if its his band, or solo.

I know you’re reading this and looking out at your small (or large) patch of land and wondering what you’re going to do all winter long with nothing to look at.  Well, snap out of it!  I’m here to tell you there IS something you can do.  You can plant!

P.S. it’s bulb season, but I’m sure you already knew that! Putting the daffodils and tulips in the ground now, with a wee bit of fertilizer, will produce beautiful Buckets (that’s Bouquets) in the spring!  But while they may look good on the table, we can’t eat them.  So dig ye some holes, and fertilize with aplomb.

It’s time for strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries.  The cool night air and the hot sun in the morning make the perfect combination of growing goodness.  And listen, I live on a farm now, I should now!  Or at least the 150 year old farmer in the John Deere trucker hat telling me this at the local feed store should know!  He’s 150 after all!  With these plants, you get the watering out of the way in the fall.  They should be watered quasi-regularly until the first frost.  But after that, you’ll be saved the crazy watering of the spring.  And just so you know, you should chop off all the flowers on your strawberries the first year so they can focus on their root growth.  Doing this in the fall, you can let them bloom away in the spring!

It’s a rough world out there.  A dangerous world.  Bumblebees are crashing into police cars for goodness sake!  Control what you can.  Plants are easy.  Water and fertilize.  People say they kill plants.  Plants are like children.  And many of those people have children.  Think of the summer benefits – strawberry shortcake, blueberry crumble, and raspberries for salads! Jack Frost may be on his way, but Mother Nature is still the Heavy Weight champion.

The good news is, some of us are over-employed (that’s good, right?).  Some of us have even moved away from the DC area *gasp* (you know who you are).  🙂

But the bad news is a dry spell for the FUD at the moment.  So, to
counteract this terrible state of affairs, we are looking for…..

    A FEW NEW WRITERS!!
Were you annoyed by a restaurant?
Do you have some random recipes to share?
Have you discovered the best wine, restaurant, food truck, or….restaurant restroom in DC?
Do you want to write a comparison article for a particular item or dish?
    Need some hipster cred?
Then we want you for DCFUD.  Send any sort of writing sample to
jay@dcfud.com, along with a couple ideas you’d like to write
    about.  It’ll be crazy!

Cuba Libre: salmon ceviche, tuna ceviche, several of their desserts (I shared, really), beef empanada, pork empanada.

    Curbside Cupcake (truck): lemon cupcake.

Red Hook Lobster Pound (truck): New England lobster roll.

District Taco (truck): chicken taco with their secret habanero sauce.

Green Bandit basil hotsauce (not the dill or cilantro) at Rocklands…which is one of the 50 or so they carry. I think they are out of it at the tables but you can buy a bottle to go for $4.  Lately they have no longer been overcooking their salmon…yum.

Northside Social’s baked goods.  Seriously, they have good scones and cookies.  Btw, they have expanded the lunch menu.

    Burma: pork with mustard greens.

Thai Square: crispy honey duck.  Yeah, I’ve had it before, and I don’t want to eat a whole order of it myself, but it is really good.

Salmon on a bed of coconut rice

Cuba Libre, which has locations in Philadelphia, Atlantic City and Orlando opened last week at 9th and H.  I bunch of us were there last night eating our way through the menu.  Here is a quick report (since Lisa Shapiro will write a full report):

Drinks: not very good, especially the white sangria and red sangria, which were more like fruit juice than a drink containing actual wine.  I wasn’t crazy about the pineapple mojito either–roasting the pineapple may have been an error (since it mellows out the pineapple)…the drink was one note.  This really does seem like the kind of place who would have these drinks down to a science.

Soup: I didn’t try the seafood soup with coconut milk since it had truffle oil (I am allergic to fungus), but everyone said it was the best thing they had.  I didn’t try the scallop ceviche for the same reason.

The salmon ceviche was very very good, and the tuna ceviche was right behind it.  The former had flavors that popped (like blood orange) and the latter was just really fresh and good.

Mixed grill: terrible.  Cooked to death, especially the sausage. And…why why why would you impale skirt steak on skewers to cook it?  You will lose the juiciness. We ordered medium and everything was well-done (in temperature, not execution) except the extra well-done sausage and one medium-well cut of beef. The onion rings that came with it were the worst thing we ate that evening…undercooked onions with an overspiced (which is different than too spicy) coating that was bready and not at all crispy.

The pictured salmon entree was good but a bit dry.

The best empanadas were the beef and the pork, both of which were very good (and fried) and very Cuban in style.

The pork belly appetizer was good.

The desserts were excellent, including the banana cake, chocolate dessert, and flan. I even snagged a membrillo alfajor (cookie) without having to order rice pudding (which it comes with).  We didn’t try the rum and coke cake. Oh, and they have a special tea blend with tropical flavors and chocolate which was very good.

All in all, the good items were very good and the bad ones were very bad.  Let other people eat here first and tell you what was good…or use this article. 🙂 I expect more from a pricey restaurant, but it also has only been open a week or so.  We’ll give them time to work out the kinks.

Service was good but it took them way too long to bring the check.
