My mother introduced me to this drink last night, by way of a slightly-less-too-much-information-than-usual-for-my-mother story of how it was introduced to her. I have, however, yet to hear a decent explanation of how it got such a strange name. Good thing that isn’t one of the questions on the Alcohol Test. Anyone here know?
Smith and Kearns
1 part Kahlua
1 part cream
1 part seltzer
3 ice cubes
Serve in a snifter.

It was named after Alice Smith and Katherine Curran–two early educators in the state of Minnesota. The teachers in the Hopkins school district were not allowed to drink alcholic beverages and came up with this drink in order to break the rules without getting caught. Since no one outside of Minnesota has ever heard of them, the spelling was eventually warped to Smith and Kearns.
