15 bucks seems to be exactly average for a regular mid-range quality dinner in Dupont. Sure there are cheaper places in that category, but there are also more expensive – 15 will get you two courses at that mediocre French place just north of the circle, an entree and wine at Thaiphoon, or just a glasses of wine and a sneer at Afterwords.

Penang ain’t nuthin but gussied-up takeout chinese food. I took an out-of-towner there once, and after sampling some of their exotically-named chutney, she said it tasted just like sweet and sour sauce, to which I couldn’t disagree. Just order out from city lights and put it on a fancy plate – there’s your penang “experience.”

I’ve personally found that the best way to appreciate Penang is at lunch time. They may have abandoned the special now, but they used to offer a daily lunch deal that included a small bowl of very light soup, a mini-appetizer (i.e., two tempura shrimp, two small satay skewers), and a lunch-sized entree for under $7. Pretty incredible deal for the location, decor and quality.
