The Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington feted its own on Sunday night at the 2010 RAMMY Awards, the annual gala to celebrate and recognize excellence in the regional restaurant and food service community.  The theme “we’ll always have … restaurants” (a take-off on the Casablanca line “we’ll always have Paris”) suggested dress of ‘40s glamour, and the crowd did not disappoint.  From Zoot suits and white dinner jackets to pin curls and fur stoles, much of the crowd got into the fashion spirit of the times.

But the night was not about the clothes.  It was about the food.  And winning.  This year, the RAMW changed the format for the event, again held at the Marriot Park Wardman Hotel.  While last year’s affair included a four-course seated dinner during which awards were handed out, this year’s program began with cocktails and passed hors-d’oeuvres, followed by the awards themselves presented in a theater style set-up, and ended with a dinner reception replete with four buffet stations, several open bars, a dessert buffet and a dance floor with a live band.  Attendees seemed to prefer the new set-up, where awards were given out quickly (each honoree was instructed to keep his or her comments to 30 seconds), and then the merriment and celebrating could begin in earnest.

FOX 5 Meteorologist Sue Palka was the Mistress of Ceremonies again this year.  She rocked the ‘40s glam look and wittily kept the program on time.  Scott Drewno from The Source by Wolfgang Puck won the coveted Chef of the Year award.  Nicholas Stefanelli of Bibiana won the Rising Culinary Star award.  Birch & Barley, which won both Best New Restaurant and Hottest Restaurant Bar Scene, was the site of the unofficial after-party.  And in the new category of Beverage/Mixology Program, PS7’s took home the prize for mixologist Gina Chersevani’s skill with spirits.

After the awards were handed out, the crowd swarmed the ball room for food and drinks, and eventually for dancing.  Over 1500 guests attended the event including politicians (D.C. Council Chair and Mayoral Candidate Vincent Gray was seen boogieing on the dance floor), Ambassadors, and, of course, the food world glitterati.  The four food buffet stations were sponsored by Australia, Chile, Mexico and Virginia, and each of the nominated mixologists created a cocktail for the event.  Guests dined on Moroccan spice rubbed lamb chops with harissa yogurt and lemon mint couscous and sous vide Australian wagyu shortrib as well as Tasmanian heritage red square cheese at the Australian table, grilled chicken pebre with a Chilean berry compote as well as a salmon, scallop, rockfish and shrimp ceviche from the Chilean station, Virginia oysters and Virginia Chesapeake Sting Ray Filet wrapped in Bacon, as well as mac & cheese with chocolate Virginia bacon, and chirlorio burritos, cream and chipotle shrimp and avocado soup courtesy of Mexico.

At midnight, when the band stopped and the lights came on, many revelers were still enjoying the evening.

Johnny’s Bistro on Main is a hidden Maryland gem.  Now let me warn you, there is some active engagement involved in this dining.  No singing or drawing on paper table cloths, but you will have to get up and order yourself.  And I hate that!  But I usually hate it because there is no alcohol.  Here, there is alcohol!  I must also admit the waitstaff would be more than happy to bring your order to the kitchen for you.  Which is confusing.  There is a 2 minute period where you sit and wait to see if someone will come and help you – and after those 2 minutes, you walk to the kitchen window, head down and spirit distressed.

We ordered the potato leek soup – it tasted as if it has started as a powder mix.  Not good not bad, thank you Knorr.  I ordered The Philly – “An Italian style sub made with capacola, hard salami, pepperoni, provolone and topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, olive oil and herbs.”  I’m from Philly – we would call this a hoagie.  And it was quite delicious with a wonderful crusty bread.  And, surprisingly, the perfect amount of shoe string fries – just enough to be tasty but not too much.  My manpanion ordered the reuben – on pretzel bread!

All in all, a wonderful lunch!  Ellicott City has the feeling of Harpers Ferry, WV – without the large river or gorgeous forest expanses.  If you are looking for an afternoon of antique watching and lunch eating, this is a place to try!

http://cheezburger.com/View/3092898816An Aussie friend passed this article on to me, and I really do think it’s an interesting concept to be debated. Basically, Sydney chef Yukako Ichikawa got sick of patrons who didn’t met her standards, particularly those involving the clean-plate club. She posted rules on her restaurant’s door, stating that patrons are required to eat everything on the plate – except a few selected garnishes (for this, I question her commitment to Sparkle Motion) – or be forced to pay extra and/or be banned from returning. She turns people away for any number of a priori violations.

    Apparently, she remains in business.

While I certainly applaud the idea of not wasting so much food – the quantities thrown out are staggering, even outside of oversize American chains like Outback, etc. – this seems a bit too precious. What do you all think?

I’ve been accused recently of never eating at the same restaurant twice.  Now I know, that’s a big, fat lie.  I’ve been to plenty of places numerous times, but I’ll admit I don’t have the impulse to visit many places a second time.  I did return, however, to Roscoe’s.

I’d been to Roscoe’s immediately after they opened in Takoma Park – before their liquor license!  And months later, I have returned, with a full bar ready to great me.

The food on my last visit was ok – there was room to grow.  This time the food was much better, but there’s still some room to grow.  We ordered some marzipan dates – tasty as they were caramelized with honey.  The pizzas took a while to arrive but had a perfect amount of toppings and crust was nicely cooked.  I will, no doubt, return a third time.

I ask you to think about that restaurant you only visited once for whatever reason, and take another trip back.  And if it sucks, remember, it isn’t my fault.

Fried green tomato with seared tuna and chow chow.

Fifty or so Food Bloggers descended upon Art & Soul’s patio recently and attacked their 501 Session Happy Hour pairing menu.  Looking at the pictures, the restaurant did a good job at plating/presentation.

The pork rinds had a nice amount of spice and were light like those bagged (supposed) onion rings you ate as a kid (but these are good).  Not what you expect when you order pork rings (since they are not heavy or greasy), but good.

The duck wings were amazing – tender, crispy, and unctuous, with a  flavorful sauce.

Three Per order but only one made survived long enough to be photographed.  Definitely my favorite, and great for $10 with a glass of Riesling included.

The fried green tomatoes were tart and flavorful, with a sturdy coating.  They were good on their own, but got lost (became the equivalent of bread) when served with seared tuna and (a flavorful chow chow) on top; they might as well have used bread.  All in all, good food, good company, and a good value.  We brought the good company. 🙂

Lisa Shapiro was playing hosted at the Food Blogger Happy Hour…and she’s always bugging me to put more pictures up…so here goes. Blame her for the “where’s Waldo” text. 🙂 She has an event tonight, the Food Wars DC viewing – be there and support our local titanic slices! 🙂
